20W-50 vs 5W-20: Which Oil Protects Better?
Просмотров 140 тыс.14 дней назад
Which viscosity provides the best protection - a 20W-50 or a 5W-20? Which one delivers the lowest friction? Since friction and wear are independent of each other, we need a special engine equipped with combustion analysis to separate engine friction from the horsepower created by combustion. To measure wear, we need used oil samples of both oils to measure the wear generated in the engine durin...
INSIDE Valvoline's SECRET R&D Laboratory to UNCOVER the TRUTH
Просмотров 339 тыс.Месяц назад
Every engine begins building up deposits the moment it starts up for the first time. Deposits in the piston ring grooves can negatively affect the performance of the piston rings - high blow by and increased oil consumption. Valvoline claims to have developed a new motor oil technology, "Restore & Protect returns pistons to factory clean by removing up to 100% of deposits when used as directed ...

More Zinc = More Wear? The REAL Truth About ZDDP Additives
Просмотров 255 тыс.Месяц назад
Zinc DialkylDithioPhosphate (AKA Zinc or ZDDP) provides anti-wear protection in motor oils, but the levels of Zinc has been reduced in motor oils over the last 20 years. Because of that, higher Zinc oils and high Zinc additives are now widely available, but is more Zinc actually better? Can you have too much Zinc? In this video, we worked with Southwest Research Institute, which is one of the l...
0W-8 Motor Oil: Too THIN to Trust? Let's Find Out!
Просмотров 283 тыс.2 месяца назад
How thin is 0W-8 motor oil? Toyota now calls for 0W-8 motor oil, which was only recently approved for use by the API. Can it actually protect the engine? Do Toyota dealerships actually install 0W-8 when they do the "free" oil changes? In this video, we put used oil analysis to work to get the answers to those questions, and the results are quite shocking! Speaking of thin oils, we also took a s...
How MUCH OIL is TOO MUCH? Dyno Results!
Просмотров 149 тыс.3 месяца назад
@themotoroilgeek visits Ben Strader at EFI University to talk oil - specifically the four “R”s of Lubrication: the Right Oil, in the Right Place, at the Right Time, and in the Right Amount. So, is it possible to have too much oil? To answer that question, the guys load the Expo LS engine on the dyno and run some tests to see what the right amount is, and what the effect of too much or too littl...
LAB RESULTS: Does Motor Oil NEED To Be Shaken BEFORE Use?
Просмотров 208 тыс.3 месяца назад
In a previous video, we tested some old oils, and we found separation in the bottom of the bottles. I was always taught to shake the bottle of motor oil before pouring it into the engine. I know shaking the bottles can't hurt, but does it actually help? Is oil like paint or peanut butter? Does shaking the bottles "fix" old oils? We took samples of five different oils, both shaken and un-shaken ...

Q: I have a 2 month old, 2024 Mazda 30CX. The break-in procedure was followed according to instructions. The first oil change was done at 2500 miles and subsequent ones will be done at/about 5000 to 5500 mile intervals. By waiting until 2500 miles to do the first change, how much life on the engine is lost vs the first change happening at 600 miles after the break-in? How much life is lost by doing the first oil change at say, 5000 or 5500 miles?
I wish I was young again! I grew up playing with engines and after getting my engineering degree, I first worked for Perkins Engines and was prepped for 18 months to be a development engineer, running engine tests. Recession though meant all the graduates were let go and after some RR aero engine test design experience, I ended up in an awesome 30-year career designing and developing construction equipment for the major OEM's with a self-directed focus on powertrains. Loved every day. Seeing the engine test lab and hearing about the process got my juices flowing just like my days at Perkins! Much appreciate the reminder ❤ Great information in your videos. 👍 There's always something new to learn no matter how much experience you have.
If you oppose then you must propose. So what do YOU think is best for euro DI engines that spec this M1 0w40 from factory? I have run this in Mercedes, Audi, and Porsche for many miles without any observable issues.
Scotty kilmar should watch this 😂 I watch all his videos and he’s the one who recommended a lot of what I did to my truck 🤷🏻♂️
Very interesting! Would love to see a similar comparison of Pennzoil 5w40 with Shell Helix Ultra 5w40. Ferrari officially recommends the Helix Ultra but it is not sold in the US. Curious to see if the Pennzoil that everyone uses instead is as good, especially since it’s lost Ferrari’s seal of approval.
is every valvoline oil product have good cleaning perormance sir? coz dificult to find clean and restrore edition in my country
What kinda oil pump you running?
My Corolla has 500k miles on the original oil
I'm glad you talked about this. I always have such a time filling the filter with a 5 quart bottle without getting it everywhere. I still wasn't sure it wasn't a new guy hazing thing I never caught up with.
lots of modern cars place filters on their side, so pre-filling is not practical.
I would like some info regarding oil weight I should use. 2016 BMW M5. Tuned and making 640whp and 600wTq. I’m living in Chicago so summer is hot and humid and car is stored for winter. I use 5w40 Quaker state currently. Looking to go to 5w50 redline. Would you recommend that as a good idea. The car is a daily driver. Most of the time it just sees stop and go traffic from time to time a couple pulls
so if you put this in a 325,000 mile engine what would you really expect happen would I loose the rest of my compression ? Sorry but I Love new tech but have alot of the old timers way of thinking id love your opinion?
In a nutshell, QS is not good oil?
Just out of curiosity, I would like for you to do an oil sample prior to oil change, then add one of the popular OIL FLUSH products that supposed to clean your engine. Then, drain it like anyone else would, then add clean oil and filter, drive a little and do another oil sample to see what changed and if it degraded the new oil to a point that could be damaging to the engine.
Are you sure about the standard CVT? As far as I know, Toyota uses e-CVT, which doesn't use any metal belt, but rather electric motor and planetary gears.
I have a Kia Sorento. One engine failed under warranty. I know it has a lot to do with the rings since I started burning a lot of oil just before it failed. From this video this oil could prevent that by cleaning out the oil ring.....but what about the carbon build up on the intake valves. I have been running Penzoil Ultra Platinum due to its low Noack value, hoping that it will cause less deposits. How does this oil stack up to the penzoil in that regard?
Is this oil dexos or GM approved?
I'll tell you guys out there i have a 2000 chevy truck HD2500 4x4 with a iron block 6L Ls, well it was putting water in the oli and oil in the water, lots, so after much studying i bought a product called K-SEAL, it worked , it did exactly what it said it would, that was 5 months ago and its still running strong.
Prime or not…makes no difference. Reason is it is physically impossible to prime some due to position of the filter.
Unlike project farm. You. Do not give real world test results. He does. You video is bogus
With all due respect , your theory for adding oil in filters holds no water ... Most new cars that have cartridge filters have no way of adding oil bcuz it will go straight down to the pan ... Most imports have side mounted filters and Subaru's new engines have an upside down filter ! Your average V8 engines don't exist that much and they are becoming Dinosaurs .. My 04 Outback with H6 has 240K on it and filter is sideways , Engine runs great and burns zero oils . Been a mechanic by trade 50 years and have never filled an oil filter .... I trust the oils coming out of a can or a bottle to be clean enough ...
Some filters you simply cannot fill full stop.
Is fuel dilution a recoverable situation like water contamination? I assume the fuel gets into the oil by adhering to the cylinder walls and past the top ring?
So there is no difference filling the filter with oil.
My cereal box gives the same information😂
That claim is BS
Why is the video quality so low on this video?
Wow! What a great product, but still lacks quantative data, in my opinion. Bring top tier oils in, and test Valvoline against it. Tear the engines down, and analyze. Also, do an oil analysis. For a proper analysis, you will need engines from the same manufacturer, high mileage, with similar carbon and sludge buildup, and then test all top tier oils. This seems like an advertisement for Valvoline without a detailed comparison.
Overhaul in a bottle. Ive had sucsess with Restore products. Ive never had issues adding Lucasvor High-tack to quiet Ford Power steering pump whine, or in any engine. I dont use viscous additives often, except in my air cooled JohnDeere 25 HP Kawasaki opposed cylinder engine as it runs very hot when mowing in 95 degree plus heat. The oil light comes on when idled down as the oil temp is killing it. Lucas/High-tack added to full synthetic oil makes a huge difference.
Pretty soon we will be just using water for oil 🙄
Now do BG MOA
If I had a nickel for every engine Ive seen run worse or fsil after an "engine flush" I'd have over $8 😂 Seriously, engine flushing I generally discourage as gunk/buildup can help seal an engines compression. Many have doubled their oil consumption after flushing/de-carbonizing treatments. Keep your oil chsnged regularly with a top tier oil & you never need to flush it as it will stay relatively clean.
You need to shake it upside down.
So i just saw this video which by the way is excellent. So my question is should i change to ultra I have been using Mobil 1 now hight milage for 250k on a suburban with 306k milage. I change my oil every 5-7 k. My decision is based on your analysis to change. But should i. Thanks much.
You have to take into account the bearing clearances too. You only want to go as heavy as possible in relation to the bearing clearances and operating temps. Running a thicker oil with factory main bearing clearances of say 2 thou could cause issue. I.e... Corvette 15w-50 on track days only. If you daily that oil you could end up with more wear as the oil temps run cooler. Will have to find the balance of viscosity vs. clearance and temps with the correct oil change interval. The tighter clearance could require thinner oil with more frequent changes.
11:03_There is another way to do it....Use a funnel and tip it down the dip stick tube.
I dont think pre-filling filters should be controversial, oil out of the bottle cant be dirty so it doesnt matter which side of the filter it goes and the simple fact is a full filter will give oil pressure a couple of seconds earlier in most engines. Trouble is on a lot of engines the filter is located at 90 degrees to the block and it is therefore not possible to fill the filter without making a huge mess !
What a great video, very informative and you are very smart. I admire the relationship you have with your dad I love it! God bless him.
i use seafoam in my small engines ,chainsaws (two stroke) and in winter when below 0° F temp in my truck .......but only in my gas , never in the oil.😊
8:50 stops between runs more water, more oil dilution_ So, if i understand correctly a sideeffect of start-stop operation in new cars is more oil dilution because there enough time for water to condense and find way to crankshaft oil. (??)
Welcome to the new Level. Weve been trying to tell people for years. We change oil every 1500 highway miles and 500 if we are severely abuse/racing. Transmission oil every 10000 23 years with the same Ram.
Thank you for the Deming callout!
Millions and millions of mechanics do oil changes without prefilling every day. Overkill. Many cars like Subaru have downside filters. Never ever had an issue in 50 years with any customer.
I've always pre-filled my oil filters, even when they are installed horizontally. My question would be for cars that use 0w-20, how much better would it be to use 5w-30? Especially in a turbocharged engine? I've always been worried about engine wear since the heat of the turbocharger will thin down the oil more. I would love to see this test done on a regular street engine that uses 0w-20 and compare it with 5w-30, do the test on a 2.0L I-4 turbo engine. Thanks for the great work as it confirmed some of what I always thought.
Could I get 87 octane fuel that is top tier?
Every time I see your videos about a better oil I want to try it, but of course none of these meet Porsche A40 certification and I never know if I should try it or not. If they are better oils but the additive package isn’t right do I want to try it?
What are your thoughts on magnetic oil drain plugs to catch ferrous material in a turbo charged engine?
got a 2000 camry, the filter is put on with the open side facing down on the front of the engine towards the radiator. If i pre fil it just dumps all over the ground???
I was wondering if it will clean off intake valves on D.I. engines?
